Why I wrote this Book?

Why I wrote this Book?

Why I wrote this Book?

I started in design. Then I became increasingly interested in the decisions that came before the making—the diagnosis, why one answer belonged and another didn’t. Somewhere along that movement, a question underneath kept getting louder:

What exactly is the thing all of this work is acting upon?

Ontological Branding™ became my attempt to stay with that question until “Brand” could no longer remain a slogan.

For nearly a decade, I was much more comfortable
being behind the work.

But writing this book made that arrangement impossible.

If I was willing to put an original theory into the world, I had to be willing to stand visibly beside it.

So this is the book—and, in a strange way, this is also me finally arriving with it :)

Written, designed, conceptualised

and directed by Asad Zia.

Respite Point

Built-in save points for long-form thought. When a movement has landed, pause here and return without rebuilding the entire argument in your head.

Respite Point

Illustration for Experience First

Experience First

Knowledge + Experience = Understanding. Part One lets the idea accumulate through experience. Part Two gives that experience explicit structure later.

Experience First

Illustration for Some paths are yours to choose

Some paths are yours to choose

When the book steps somewhere useful but non-essential, it tells you. Follow the detour when curiosity wants it; keep moving when it doesn’t.

Illustration for What lands gets somewhere to settle

What lands gets somewhere to settle

After a major movement, the book gives the idea room to register before asking you to carry the next one.

Illustration for Deep ideas do not all arrive as text

Deep ideas do not all arrive as Text

A concept might arrive as a scene, an artefact, a diagram, a game, a historical event or a formal principle—whichever form makes the relation easiest to encounter.

Deep ideas do not all arrive as Text

Illustration for The book asks you to truly see

The book asks you to truly see

Familiar ideas are treated as unresolved questions. The book slows them down, turns them around and follows them until something underneath becomes newly visible.

Fair
Warning

Fair
Warning

Fair
Warning

The choice is yours.

This is not a 10-step manual— That’s the point.

This book asks something of you. Not obedience or agreement. Attention.

Some ideas will ask you to stay longer than you expected. Some will refuse to resolve on the first encounter. Others may change the meaning of something you thought you already understood. That is deliberate. If what you want is a fixed sequence of steps, a collection of tactics, or an answer you can immediately copy into your work, this book is doing something else.

I designed the reading experience to make that attention easier to sustain.

I did not remove the need for it.

The return on that attention

See what works from what belongs

Separate consistency from coherence

Distinguish recognition from reputation

Know ambition from imitation

Detach redesign from actual change

The point is not to leave with my answers in your head.
It is to leave able to see more for yourself.

The book asks for attention. It gives you back resolution.
